What is Independent Living?
Independent Living is controlling and directing your own life and taking responsibility for your own actions. It is knowing what choices are available and selecting what is right for you. Independent Living means being as self-sufficient as possible.
Independent living – this means young people having choice, control and freedom over their lives and the support they have, their accommodation and living arrangement, including supported living.
All young people need to learn independent living skills. To live independently there are a set of skills that make every day easier and all students at AKTI are given the opportunity to learn the following:
- Time management
- Memory and concentration skills
- Self organisation skills
- Basic cookery skills
- Personal care
- Travel training
- Travelling to chosen places
- Routine household tasks
- Completing forms and other documents
- Managing money and understand budgeting
- Understand what is happening and make decisions
